West Ham Are Frontrunners To Sign "Versatile" £20m Gem

West Ham United are finally beginning to make some headway in the transfer market.

The Irons have made a combined £60m bid for Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay, whilst they have also agreed a £32m deal to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.

One of the other names at the top of the Hammers’ agenda is Ian Maatsen.

What’s the latest on Ian Maatsen to West Ham?

According to Evening Standard journalist Nizaar Kinsella, the Irons are 'considered frontrunners' to sign the Chelsea youngster, should he leave Stamford Bridge.

It's thought that the young full-back is keen to stay at the west London outfit but wants assurances over his development plan and long-term prospects at the club before agreeing to a new deal.

The Netherlands U21 international has just one year left on his current contract, leaving a host of clubs keeping a watchful eye over developments, including West Ham.

Eredivisie giants Ajax and Ligue 1 side RC Lens are also thought to be in the race to land Maatsen, whilst another loan stint away from the Blues hasn't been ruled out yet.

He is currently valued at around £20m.

Would Ian Maatsen be a good signing for West Ham?

In Mauricio Pochettino’s short reign at the Chelsea helm, the 21-year-old gem has been described as “exceptional” by Kinsella due to his performances in pre-season. Across five games, he notched two games and an assist, whilst being forced to play out of position due to the more senior figures of Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella.

If he opts to stay at Stamford Bridge, the Argentine coach is set to play him as a winger or an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 system.

This creates an interesting conundrum for Maatsen, as West Ham’s interest would likely see him deployed in his more conventional left-back role. Moreover, long-serving servant Aaron Cresswell has been linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, which would seemingly create space for the youngster at the London Stadium.

Whilst on loan at Burnley last term, Clarets boss Vincent Kompany described Maatsen as a “very versatile full-back with lots of energy and great potential."

This versatility has stemmed from his adaptability to differing positional demands.

At Turf Moor, he recorded the joint-second most assists (6) and the third-most interceptions per game (1.4). This blend of defensive solidity and attacking verve means he is capable of across the left-hand side, a trait noted by Pochettino and Kompany.

Therefore, Hammers boss David Moyes would likely view Maatsen as competition for Emerson, who endured an inconsistent debut season in east London.

Emerson West Ham

Over the past 365 days, the Dutch outranks the Italian for a number of metrics including shot-creating actions per 90 (2.38 vs 1.98), progressive passes per 90 (6.21 vs 3.07), progressive carries per 90 (3.36 vs 2.59), tackles per 90 (2.18 vs 1.77), and interceptions per 90 (1.51 vs 1.02), via FBref.

Perhaps Emerson is a victim of Moyes’ rigidly unattractive style of play, but ultimately the 29-year-old dud only managed 16 Premier League starts without any injuries, so he looks easily replaceable.

After Maatsen’s glittering showings in the Championship and in the early stages for Chelsea this summer, it could well be a commendable coup for the 2023 Europa Conference League winners and one that spells trouble for the West Ham full-back.

'Mir wanted former team-mates appointed to selection committee'

Shamsa Hashmi, former general manager of the Pakistan women side, criticised the former captain’s tactics, and said that she had been trying to control Mir’s ‘manoeuvring and hegemony by counselling’

Umar Farooq05-Oct-2017

Sana Mir gets down for a reverse sweep•International Cricket Council

Sana Mir, recently axed from captaincy, has found herself back in the spotlight as the former women’s general manger Shamsa Hashmi said that she had been trying to control Mir’s ‘manoeuvring and hegemony by counselling’. She criticised Mir’s captaincy over the years, saying she had been discouraging players, and had taken shocking on-field decisions. Mir will be replaced by Bismah Maroof as captain, a decision that is part of the PCB’s revamp of its women’s cricket set-up following the team’s poor performance at the World Cup in June. Shamsa was herself dismissed as general manager.”I never spoke earlier in public about what Sana had been saying, because I was part of the PCB, and I do like to follow the organisation’s obligations,” Shamsa told reporters in a rare media appearance at her home. “I heard she didn’t want to work with the management of the women’s wings, but still she had been working with us for the last two-and-a-half years. Now I don’t know what suddenly went wrong. There may be a lot of factors behind it but she never conveyed those to me, except one. She wanted to have her former fellow players appointed to the selection committee, and one of them she wanted to have as women’s team trainer. I didn’t want to be a part of it, and I told her that I would have to think about it. So if that was the problem, then I can’t do anything about it.”Mir, the team manager, and a couple of senior players had been singled out for blame for Pakistan’s winless World Cup campaign. In a damning report, coach Sabih Azhar accused Mir of adopting a “negative approach” and of being completely self-obsessed. He also complained that Ayesha Ashar – who has been sacked from the managerial post and made interim general manager women wings – paid most of her attention to some senior players and was “cold” towards the younger players.”If we recall our World Cup performance this year, it wasn’t bad at all,” Shamsa said. “But the way players are being used, with rapid batting order changes and unorthodox changes in bowling – these are the things that let us down. I want to recall the England match in which Heather Knight and (Natalie) Sciver scored hundreds, and most of their runs were on the leg, but the field wasn’t adjusted accordingly.”Against South Africa, for example, we lost by [a small margin]. We actually lost the game by conceding 16 runs in the second-last over. Scoring 16 runs in last two overs while chasing is always difficult and I believe that over should have been given to your best bowler which the captain didn’t do. Against Sri Lanka, we lost only because we didn’t take the Powerplay and that was the responsibility of the captain in the middle. So these are the critical things to notice.”Mir, 31, had, before the World Cup, hinted at retiring from the game. The PCB top brass then came up with the suggestion of giving Mir a graceful exit, but later decided to retain her for a few series and assess her individual performance. Mir had also stepped down as captain of the T20 side after 2016 Women’s World T20. “I do respect Sana as a player and since she is captain, I wanted to give her a graceful exit,” Shamsa said. “But as far as her manipulation and hegemony is concerned, I told her we should abide only by merit.”

Liverpool Must Land £69m La Liga Star

Liverpool have been dragged into a huge transfer saga surrounding Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo over the last 48 hours and Jurgen Klopp will surely be unimpressed with the ongoing situation.

How much did Liverpool offer for Moises Caicedo?

The Reds agreed a huge record-breaking £111m fee with the Seagulls in the earlier hours of Friday morning, however, it has been reported heavily by Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano that Caicedo is only interested in signing for Chelsea this summer.

With just over a fortnight left to secure the much-needed reinforcements in midfield before the transfer window closes, the powerbrokers at Anfield need to quickly identify alternatives to sign instead of the Ecuodorian, which shouldn't be too difficult to achieve considering there is clearly a healthy budget available.

Who are Liverpool's transfer targets?

The Merseyside giants have been linked with a number of midfielders over the summer so far and following the unexpected departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, the midfield rebuild at Anfield has become an even more desperate for the club.

Like Caicedo, Southampton youth prospect has been heavily linked with both Liverpool and Chelsea over the last few months, however, the Reds could now be looking further afield to secure the experience and quality they need in the six role this season.

Liverpool have been again linked with a move for Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni, a player who could be the answer to Klopp's biggest headache.

In a report by The Telegraph at the end of last month, Chris Bascombe revealed that Liverpool could potentially explore another move for Tchouameni in their pursuit to strengthen the defensive roles in the centre of the pitch.

It was also reported in June that Liverpool had made a €55m (£47m) bid, however, the offer was short of Real Madrid's expectations, with Florentino Perez demanding nothing short of €80m (£69m) to part ways with the midfielder.

There is no doubt that Tchouameni possesses the quality and winning mentality to make an instant impact at Anfield, as well as being the perfect profile of player to work alongside Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to complete the midfield transformation.

The Frenchman is one of the hottest midfield prospects across the top five European leagues – ranking in the top 15% of his positional peers for pass completion, clearances, aerial duels won and shots on goal, as per FBref.

Over 33 La Liga appearances last season, the 23-year-old – once hailed as "pure gold" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – registered four assists, tallied up an impressive 94% pass completion rate, successfully completed 78% of his dribbles and won 66% of his duels combined, as well as averaging 63.1 touches per game, demonstrating his dominance in the centre of the pitch.

Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni.

Indeed, Tchouameni previously rejected a move to Anfield when he joined Real Madrid last summer, however, with Jude Bellingham arriving at the Bernabeu and only 24 starts in the Spanish top-flight last season, there is no reason why Liverpool couldn't present an attractive prospect for the player by making him the star man in the six role.

With that being said, it remains to be seen whether the France international would be open to a move to Merseyside this summer, but Klopp is running out of time to fill the position with a return to Premier League football commencing this weekend against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Hammers Receive "Encouragement" In Pursuit Of "Superstar"

West Ham United are getting "encouragement" from £11,000-a-week "Superstar" that he would be open to a move to the London Stadium this summer, per Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

West Ham United news – What's the latest?

It's been a real rollercoaster of a summer for the Hammers faithful this year, as they have had to watch the club sell their biggest star whilst potential transfers seemingly swap from being on to suddenly being back off again in no time at all.

After Declan Rice was sold to Arsenal for £105m at the start of the window, the Irons struggled to bring in any replacements, at one point holding the unwanted title of being the only side not to sign any players in the summer.

Thankfully, that's no longer the case following the arrival of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse for around £30m and the potentially even more exciting signing of Mexican international Edson Alvarez from Ajax in a deal worth a reported £35m.

And in even more positive news, it looks like the Conference League champions might be returning to the Amsterdam club to try and sign another one of their emerging stars, Ghanaian international Mohammed Kudus.

According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, the East Londoners have been given a boost in their pursuit of the positionally versatile midfielder as a source has informed them that the player himself would be "open" to joining the Premier League side.

Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus.

He explained the situation on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily), saying:

"We're told that West Ham remain in talks with Ajax over the signing of the midfielder Mohammed Kudus. Plenty of interest from other clubs, which I am sure West Ham United will be very, very well aware of, including Premier League clubs as well.

"We think Brighton were close to an agreement earlier on this summer they still may be interested as well; there's even talk of Arsenal and Chelsea being interested in Kudus.

"But, the information I am getting this morning is that one source claims that West Ham are getting encouragement that Kudus himself could be open to a move to the London Stadium."

How old is Mohammed Kudus?

Born August 2nd, 2000, in Nima, Ghana, the 23-year-old is clearly a man in high demand this summer, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Brighton & Hove Albion all trying to sign the Ajax man at different points in recent weeks.

It's easy to understand why when you look at his performances for the Amsterdam side over recent seasons.

In his 30 Eredivisie appearances last year, he scored 11 goals, provided three assists, took 2.3 shots per game, maintained a passing accuracy of 87.6%, won three Man-of-the-Match awards and averaged an outstanding match rating of 7.29, per WhoScored.

The £11,000-a-week ace didn't hide away on the biggest stage either, making five starts in the Champions League, scoring four goals, providing two assists, winning one aerial dual per game and averaging an even better match rating of 7.34, also per WhoScored.

Mohammed Kudus Chelsea target

His displays last year can't just be put down to good fortune either, as his underlying numbers are absolutely fantastic and suggest that were he given a chance, he could likely replicate at least some of his output in a top-five league.

According to FBref, which compares players in a similar position across what they consider the next best eight competitions, the 5 foot 9 "superstar" sits in the top 1% for non-penalty expected goals, pass completion and successful take-ons, the top 2% for non-penalty goals, and the top 4% for total shots and touches in the opposition's penalty area, all per 90.

Described as a player that "can make the difference with and without the ball" by temporary Ajax manager John Heitinga earlier this year; if David Moyes and Co can get this deal over the line, then their summer business will start to look a lot more positive.

– Foi uma negociação dura, todo mundo sabe que o presidente não gostaria de fazer shows lá, mas a gente se comprometeu a fazer poucos shows, mas fazer. You have to bowl slow to get wickets – Chisoro

Most of the left-arm spinner’s success has come because he bowls flat and quick, but on Test debut, he realised he needed to change his ways

Liam Brickhill in Bulawayo30-Oct-2017

CWI Media

On Sunday, Tendai Chisoro became the 103rd Zimbabwean to play Test cricket. It marked a remarkable renaissance for the man had switched from being a fast bowler to a spinner only two years ago and even now is often pigeon-holed as a limited-overs specialist.Though he struggled to make an impact with either bat or ball in his first day on the field as a Test cricketer, Chisoro revelled in the experience and insisted that Zimbabwe were still in a position of strength. They still lead West Indies by 248 runs.Picked as a specialist spinner, Chisoro had to wait until late in the afternoon to have a bowl. “It helped with the nerves, not bowling too early on,” he said. “It gave me time to settle. And I knew it was the team plan. There was a leftie and a rightie batting, so since the captain [Greame Cremer] turns the ball away from the right-hand bat [so] he’d bowl from one end. We fancied Sikandar Raza more than me or the captain bowling at the left-hander, because he turns the ball away.”When Chisoro did eventually bowl, he came desperately close to picking up a wicket in his first over. But the hard-hit drive from Kieran Powell landed just short of Solomon Mire at long-on. He troubled Kraigg Brathwaite a lot more, repeatedly beating the outside edge.”I think I started well with the ball, but I think I could bowl a little straighter,” Chisoro said. “I was a little wide to the right hander, and the ball kept missing everything – the bat, the stumps, the pads. If I bowl a little straighter and then one doesn’t turn, I could get an lbw.”Adjusting his line is only part of the battle for Chisoro, who finds most of his success bowling flat and full. Before this series, he spent time playing limited-overs club cricket in England, and then turned out for Speen Ghar Tigers in Afghanistan’s Shpageeza Cricket League.”I don’t really think about seam anymore as it’s been two years since I bowled seam,” Chisoro said. “So the adjustment I had to make came from being used to the limited-overs game, T20 and one-day stuff. I tend to bowl a little straighter to the right-hander, and a little quicker. Luckily, I didn’t play in the first Test, so I had time to adjust in bowling a little slower. That was entirely up to Streaky [Heath Streak, the coach] He helped me out with that. It was going to be easier for them if I’d bowled quicker, because then the ball just comes straight on. To set up the batsman [in a Test], you have to bowl a little slower.”Zimbabwe were only able to take one wicket in 49 overs. Then again West Indies haven’t exactly raced ahead. “When we look at the score now, it’s 78 for 1, but considering the number of overs we’ve bowled, the run-rate is a bit slow even for Test cricket,” Chisoro said. “So if you add two wickets onto that score, it’s a different ballgame.”[Devendra] Bishoo is one of the two batsmen out there now, and he’s not considered a batsman, so tomorrow he’ll come and play shots, and give us chances. Hopefully in the first hour we’ll strike early, and after that look to keep attacking them.”Considering what happened in the first Test, if we bowl West Indies out and we have a lead of around 100, we’ll fancy ourselves to bowl them out in the fourth innings and win the Test match. As a team, we said if we get 650 runs in both innings combined, we’ll be safe and have a chance to win the game.”

Sri Lanka will host India and Bangladesh for a T20 tri-series in March 2018 to celebrate their 70th year of independence. A Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) release confirmed seven T20Is to be played from March 8 to 20 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Each team will play each other twice before the final on March 20.Called the Nidahas Trophy, the tri-series will also mark the 70th year for SLC. Board president Thilanga Sumathipala was the visionary behind the Nidahas Trophy in 1998 too, which marked the 50th year of the country’s independence and involved India and New Zealand as the visiting teams. India had won the trophy then which was played as an ODI tri-series.”We are privileged to be a part of Sri Lanka’s 70th year celebrations, there is no closer friend to the BCCI than Sri Lanka [and Bangladesh] and when Mr. Sumathipala first floated this invitation, there was almost instant agreement that the Indian Team would participate for this reason,” BCCI CEO Rahul Johri said.Sumathipala, too, expressed his optimism on the relevance of the series: “70 years is a long journey, and one that needs to be commemorated and celebrated. We are happy that our closest neighbours, who share more or less the same journey of independence, are joining us in this celebration, which we believe will be a milestone and an augur of the great things to come in the annals of cricket.”
