Burnley Close To Signing £12.9m French Defender

Burnley are closing in on the signing of Borussia Dortmund teenager Soumaila Coulibaly, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the latest Burnley transfer news?

The Clarets and Vincent Kompany haven’t wasted any time in preparations for the new Premier League season, with some players even reporting back for pre-season at the beginning of the month – before the Champions League final.

In the transfer market, the club have also been making swift moves, with defenders Jordan Beyer and Dara O’Shea joining on permanent deals from Borussia Monchengladbach and West Brom respectively.

Meanwhile, an offer has been made to sign Anderlecht defender Noah Sadiki, whereas Burnley are also preparing a new offer to sign Millwall star Zian Flemming.

To top things off, it looks as if the club are about to break their transfer record to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford following his loan spell with Bolton Wanderers.

Reports have claimed that the 20-year-old, who is currently away with England’s U21s at the European Championships, is close to a £19m move to Turf Moor, and it appears as if Coulibaly is also on the way to Lancashire.

Romano took to Twitter in the last 48 hours to share an update on Burnley and Coulibaly. He revealed that the player is on course to join on a season-long loan which will then become permanent in a transfer worth around €15m (£12.9m).

“Understand Burnley are now closing in on Soumaila Coulibaly deal — it’s gonna be loan from Borussia Dortmund with mandatory buy clause.

“Understand value of the deal is gonna be around €15m total fee. Here we go soon.”

Who is Soumaila Coulibaly?

Coulibaly is just 19 years of age and is primarily a left-footed centre-back who has two caps for France at U20 level.

The defender made the move to Dortmund from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer back in 2021 and has been making the majority of his appearances for the reserve side. Coulibaly has turned out twice for Dortmund at senior level and currently holds a €1m Transfermarkt valuation.

Recently, Coulibaly has been compared to Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano, with the media saying:

“At 6'3" Coulibaly has an imposing build, but while the teenager will undoubtedly fill out to add muscle to his wiry frame, he also has the footballing ability to make him the complete package, just like Bayern Munich man-mountain and France international, Dayot Upamecano.”

Coulibaly also appears to be catching the eye of Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic, who said:

"He trains with us regularly. He's been getting better and better and finding consistency in the third tier."

Should he complete a move to Turf Moor as expected, Coulibaly may rival the likes of Beyer, Hjalmar Ekdal, Ameen Al-Dakhil and O’Shea for a starting spot in Kompany’s side.

He could well be viewed as a future star, though, so securing his services could turn out to be an extremely shrewd move in the long run, and by the looks of things, it may be just a matter of time until a transfer is announced.

Arsenal Could Repeat Pepe Disaster With "Powerful" £34m Gem

Arsenal have a checkered past when delving into the French market, having brought some of their best-ever stars over from Ligue 1, but also some of their worst.

It is hard to look past the likes of Robert Pires as one of their star imports from that division, to which a true dynasty was built alongside Arsene Wenger.

However, it is likely the promise that replicating such sensational business brings that lends them to make these errors. Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh offer the counter-balance for the successes William Saliba and Olivier Giroud proved to be, and yet Nicolas Pepe stands out amongst all as comfortably the worst of the lot.

The Ivorian stands as the cautionary tale with regard to looking to the French market, as his 2019 transfer to LOSC Lille has been nothing short of catastrophic.

Signed after his breakout year, Unai Emery unloaded a club-record £72m fee to tempt him to join his revolution, which would be cut short just months after this arrival.

The underperformance of this wide man likely weighed heavily on this decision, which will surely have Mikel Arteta thinking twice about making the reported move to sign Elye Wahi from Montpellier.

Whilst the proposed €40m (£34m) fee would mark a drop in the ocean compared to Pepe's sum, it still represents money they simply cannot afford to waste if they are to keep pace with Manchester City.

How good is Elye Wahi?

Having scored 23 goals and assisted 12 across all competitions in his final season before making the move, many thought that in the left-footed right winger the Gunners would be getting their next true star set to dominate at the Emirates for years to come.

However, five league goals in his debut year in England denoted a fierce struggle to acclimatise, which can be felt by many players moving to such a physically demanding division. He has made just 112 appearances now for the club and seems set to depart this summer for a fraction of his initial price.

The same could well happen to Wahi should he tread that same path, especially given he has arguably even less experience starring at the top level than the 28-year-old had.

mikel-arteta-arsenal

Having just notched 19 league goals and assisted a further six most recently, this marked only the second time that the 20-year-old had struck double figures in Ligue 1.

For comparison, Pepe too had only achieved this feat twice before his switch, whilst also being far from the focal point that Wahi has been for his side.

Despite that, praise has understandably rushed in for the youngster who has torn up the French top flight of late. Ex-Caen academy director Francis de Taddeo even noted: "He is a powerful, athletic and fast player with a range of dribbling skills where only he knows what he is going to do next."

However, the same was said of Arsenal's underwhelming record signing, with Jamie Redknapp perhaps jumping the gun on his praise, claiming despite a loss to Liverpool in August 2019: "I’ve seen Arsenal come here in the last few years and they haven’t done anything at all. But they have got a special talent in Pepe, I’ve been so impressed with him. He’s always looking to run on the shoulder, he’s causing mayhem."

He stands as the clear indicator that all that glitter is not gold, especially that which comes from Ligue 1.

Whilst Wahi might seem like the hot prospect to acquire now, a big-money fee could see them face another financial disaster akin to their disastrous 2019 signing of Pepe.

Gambhir, Lynn blaze away in record chase

Kolkata Knight Riders gunned down a target of 184 without losing a single wicket – a world record in T20 cricket

The Report by Alagappan Muthu07-Apr-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details5:30

Hogg: Bamboozled by Lynn’s six-hitting

Kolkata Knight Riders took down a target of 184 without losing a single wicket – a world record in T20 cricket – and the man that did the heavy lifting was Chris Lynn.Promoted to open the batting for only the second time in 86 T20s, he equalled the franchise’s second-fastest fifty – off 19 balls – put on the IPL’s highest opening partnership – 184* – with Gautam Gambhir and finally secured victory with 5.1 overs to spare. The result – as emphatic as it was – highlighted Gujarat Lions’ weak bowling attack and the mistake they made by choosing four opening batsmen as their overseas players.Lynnsanity – 93 not out off 41 balls, eight sixes, six foursMaking Lynn bat as high as possible makes sense. He smacks fast bowling at an average of 43.10 and at a run-rate of 10.19 an over. At his most recent T20 tournament – the Big Bash – he hit a boundary every four balls.Brendon McCullum, his captain at the Brisbane Heat, told the commentators that the idea of bowling a good length to Lynn was a non-starter. The very length that makes Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni potent. As a result, Gujarat Lions’ best bowlers were used for only three out of the first six overs.Left-arm wristspinner Shivil Kaushik, in only his second season of the IPL, and Manpreet Gony, playing in the tournament for the first time since 2013, were asked to pick up the slack in the fielding restrictions. It led to a Knight Riders record as they made their highest score in the Powerplay – 73 runs.Gambhir’s rage – 76 not out off 48 balls, 12 foursGambhir actually outscored Lynn at the start, so much that he made his best score after six overs in the IPL. Of the 40 runs he made in this period, 16 came in a single over off Kaushik, whose unorthodox bowling action tends to affect his control.Kaushik was perhaps introduced into the attack to mess with Lynn’s timing, but Gambhir, being an excellent player of spin, took charge. The head-to-head on the night read 23 runs off 13 balls with five fours. With both ends leaking runs, Lions were simply unsure of what to do. And that was all dandy for the Knight Riders captain, who racked up his 32nd IPL fifty, two short of David Warner’s record.Lions’ bowling woesChasing teams had won four out of five IPL matches in Rajkot before Friday, but Lions would have fancied their chances, all the way up to the point where five of their six bowlers conceded economy rates of 10 and more. Kulkarni was smashed for 42 in 2.5 overs, Gony 32 in two, Kaushik 40 in four , Dwayne Smith 23 in one and Shadab Jakati 30 in three. Two of their first-choice picks – Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja – are injured. Their eight overs were sorely missed. Considering the team management would have known that going into the game, it was a surprise that James Faulkner and Andrew Tye were ignored. Their ability to change the pace and bowl yorkers would have been useful in throwing off Lynn and Gambhir, who were basically pressing forward, lining the balls up, and golf-swinging them for six.Whens Lions had it goodFifty three runs in the final four overs. That’s the high Lions were brought down from. Their batsmen had done well to not buckle under pressure through the middle overs. Not even when they made only 39 runs in six overs between the 10th and 16th.Suresh Raina had never made a fifty in his first match of an IPL season. He corrected that with an innings that wasn’t always perfect but pretty useful. If people wanted to point out his four mis-hits fell between fielders, two dropped catches and the missing of an easy run-out chance, he can point to the scoreboard and say he made 68 off 51 balls.Dinesh Karthik was the other batting mastermind. He hit 11.28 runs per over – his second-highest in an innings of 25 balls or more. His 47 was the cameo Lions needed especially after their openers fell after helping put on 52 runs inside the Powerplay.Brendon McCullum smashed Kuldeep Yadav for a six and four before hitting across the line and falling lbw. It was the 21st time he has fallen to left-arm spin in the IPL and now averages 17.80 against it. Jason Roy was undone by Piyush Chawla, which brought his tally against legspin in T20s to 48 runs off 47 balls and five dismissals.

West Indies cautious after Pakistan's 376

On a pitch that posed very little challenges, both teams were content to play cricket of a rather cautious brand

The Report by Danyal Rasool11-May-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:29

Reverse swing will come into play on flat pitch – Azhar Ali

West Indies safely negotiated an awkward last half hour to head to stumps without having lost a wicket in response to Pakistan’s first innings total of 376. Kraigg Brathwaite and Keiron Powell were circumspect, eager to bat again tomorrow and technically adept enough to deserve it. That only 14 runs came off the 11 overs they faced will bother no one, considering Pakistan had trudged along in much the same way for almost two sessions. On a day likely to be remembered for the pace, or the lack of it, Azhar Ali got his 14th Test hundred, and was supported by Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfraz Ahmed as Pakistan looked set to bat through the day. However, West Indies bowlers came back into it in the final session as the last five Pakistan wickets fell for only 65 runs.It was hard to clear the infield – Azhar

A slow outfield and a ball that got softer as the day progressed hampered Pakistan’s run-making, according to Azhar Ali. The Pakistan batsman, who scored 127 in his side’s first-innings score of 376, said that run-scoring wasn’t quite as easy on a flat track but was pleased the side had managed to come close to its target score of 400.
“As a batsman you would like to score as fluently as you can but, as you can see, the outfield is really slow and the ball doesn’t really travel and it gets soft,” he said. “It’s hard to clear the infield first and if you do then it doesn’t go far. It’s really hard and sometimes you had to hit a six to get going again. It was tough but we wanted to score 400 runs in the first innings and we got close to that. From now on, we have to dominate the game and try and put pressure on West Indies.”
Azhar was hopeful Pakistan’s three seamers could capitalize on reverse swing on the third day. He singled out debutant Hasan Ali as an exciting prospect to watch.
“I think at some stage the reverse-swing should be coming in to play. They are all good fast bowlers, specially Hasan, who is making his debut. He’s a very exciting bowler to look at and he’s quite skiddy, so hopefully he can get some reverse swing going. They are very capable of picking up 20 wickets on it and it is really important for us to finish off the series.”

All eyes were on Sarfraz after tea, with Pakistan looking to inject some sorely lacking momentum into their innings. However, they were dealt a major setback early on in the session when Jason Holder took two wickets off two balls to send back Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah. With the score on 322 for 8, West Indies would have hoped to run through the last two batsmen and make Pakistan pay for their lack of intent earlier on. But Sarfraz maddened them by bringing his street-cricket skills to the fore. The wicketkeeper batsman basically took guard outside leg stump, forcing the bowlers off their lines, and collected 39 of the 45-run partnership between himself and Mohammad Abbas.Just as Pakistan began to close in on 400, Sarfraz edged one from Devendra Bishoo into first slip’s hands. Hasan Ali came in and was good for a pair of lusty boundaries before Bishoo cleaned him up. Pakistan’s bowlers may still be favourites with a cushion of 376 runs behind them, but a top team should really aspire for more after batting nearly 150 overs. In the morning, taking aim at all those criticising them for batting too slowly on the opening day, Pakistan had a simple response. You ain’t seen nothing yet. There were only nine runs in the first 10 overs – and among them were five successive maidens. The run – if you can call not scoring a run – made an early start by half an hour almost needless. Why bother when the game just struggled to move on?West Indies formed their second guard of honour of the Test as they welcomed Misbah after dismissing Younis Khan lbw for 18 off 75 balls. Then they outdid their generosity by dropping the Pakistan captain, playing his last Test, on 0. Squared up by a ball that shaped away, Misbah looked back to see his outside edge being dropped by Shane Dowrich. It was the wicketkeeper’s second drop of the Test, and it left Holder, the bowler, buckling at the knees.West Indies, for all their struggle to pick up wickets, did keep things quiet with the old ball. Eventually, Shannon Gabriel took the new one in the 89th over, which only provided a fresh signal for Pakistan to retreat further into their shell. Misbah had, at that point, uncoupled batting with scoring runs completely, at one stage having one run off 52 balls. Azhar at the other end finished the morning with 37 runs off 92 balls as Pakistan achieved their objective of not losing too many wickets. After lunch, however, Azhar was undone attempting a rare attacking stroke, a slog sweep over midwicket. He missed the ball by some distance it spun back into his stumps, bringing to an end a grinding hundred that had looked like hard work. Flickering signs of aggression emerged from Asad Shafiq, as he looked to go over the top in a bid to improve his side’s desperately poor run rate. However, he picked out long-on to give offspinner Roston Chase the third of his four wickets.A better side than West Indies would probably have punished Pakistan for their approach on Thursday, and West Indies themselves may yet do so. But, Misbah has made an art of being a contrarian, and as he leaves the Test arena, don’t bet against him proving everyone wrong one final time.

Angel Di Maria Embarrasses Former Teammate Cristiano Ronaldo

Pre-season friendlies are always an enjoyable watch as we get familiar faces up against each other, and new players coming through the ranks to impress out of nowhere.

It’s not a time when results should play too much of a part in future predictions, however, with teams simply getting up to speed before doing their best work when it really matters.

That’s not to say that certain players don’t have the chance to embarrass opponents, of course. And that’s exactly what happened to Cristiano Ronaldo up against former Real Madrid teammate Angel Di Maria, as Al-Nassr took on Benfica this week.

Angel Di Maria’s skill leaves Cristiano Ronaldo Bemused

Di Maria is one of the most elegant players of his generation, with the ability to pluck the ball from impossible angles, controlling it expertly. Even at 35, the Argentine winger has still got plenty to offer, too, as he looks to star once more after swapping Paris Saint-Germain for Benfica this summer.

The World Cup winner wasted no time in showing off that elegance against Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr side, either, with his former teammate left bewildered by his clever flick.

As you can see in the footage above, with two quick movements, Di Maria expertly controls the ball, before flicking it over the head of the incoming Ronaldo to remind us all why the Al-Nassr man was never a defender, before CR7 then hauled his former teammate to the ground in a flash of frustration.

The moment summed up a day to forget for Ronaldo, who could do nothing as his side were defeated 4-1 by Benfica, with Di Maria even scoring on his debut for the club.

So far, it’s been a pre-season to forget as a whole for Ronaldo’s side, who were also defeated by Celta Vigo 5-0, to make an aggregate score of 9-1 up against European sides.

It is perhaps ironic that Al Nassr have been smashed by two European sides after Ronaldo recently said: “I won’t return to European football, the door is completely closed.

“I’m 38 years old, also European football has lost lot of quality… only valid one is Premier League, they’re way ahead of all the other leagues.”

How much is Cristiano Ronaldo paid per week?

Setting the trend of making the move to Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo earns a reported £3.6m per week at Al-Nassr, in what is an eye-watering amount.

If the wage was to be calculated per minute, then the star forward earns £357 every 60 seconds, meaning that by the time his side have had the chance to ship five goals against a mid-table La Liga side, Ronaldo would have earned a whopping £32,130.

It remains to be seen whether or not Al-Nassr will be among those competing for the title in the Saudi Pro League. After all, others around them have strengthened a significant amount, particularly current champions Al-Ittihad.

Indeed, last season’s title winners have so far welcomed N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema, and Jota, as they look to defend their crown.

Fans have been quick to react to Al-Nassr’s pre-season, and particularly Di Maria’s fantastic piece of skill that left Ronaldo frustrated and bewildered up against Benfica.

Exclusive: Wrexham "Could Explore" MLS This Summer

Since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over at the club, Wrexham have enjoyed the Hollywood treatment, with fireworks on and off the pitch, culminating in promotion back to the Football League.

Now in League Two, manager Phil Parkinson and co will be hoping to earn back-to-back promotions next season in what would be an incredible campaign. With the summer transfer window well underway, too, they could yet welcome reinforcements to stick to the script of potential glory.

So far this summer, the Welsh club have welcomed Will Boyle from Championship outfit Huddersfield Town, representing quite the coup for the League Two side.

What's more, in an exciting new development, a change in the rules regarding players receiving visas could see Wrexham target players in America, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What did Ben Jacobs say about Wrexham?

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Jacobs said: "A rule change in terms of getting visas also allows Wrexham to now explore the US market as well.

"So I would keep an eye on that, to see whether Wrexham bring on board any American players. That might be one to watch over the coming weeks."

Of course, the club have been spending part of their pre-season in America, squaring up against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, so they would have had plenty of time to potentially take a look at the talent on show around them.

The new rule will allow them to bring in a certain number of players who do not meet the requirements for work permits. Premier League and Championship sides can sign up to four such players, whilst League One and League Two sides can sign up to two.

As of right now, it remains to be seen just who walks through the door at Wrexham this summer, but the rule change at least gives them the chance to really explore the talent in America.

How much are Wrexham worth?

Wrexham co-owners RobMcElhenneyandRyanReynolds celebrate at full-time after Wrexham win the National League.

Paying a reported £2m for the club back in 2021, Reynolds and McElhenney have since seen their investment go up in value. The club is now reportedly worth 300% more than the initial price that the Hollywood stars paid in 2021.

It's no wonder that the club has increased to such a level, in truth, following their National League win, with sponsorship deals such as the one with Tiktok also helping financially.

The fact is, Reynolds and McElhenney's continued presence, alongside Wrexham's success on the pitch, has quickly started to awaken a sleeping giant in English football.

Those at the club will hope to take things up another level next season, as they seek consecutive promotions. If they can get to League One, they'd be just two promotions away from the Premier League.

To go from the National League to the third tier of English football in the space of only a handful of seasons would feel like one of the quickest rises in English football history.

They've got the star power in the stands to do it. Now, it remains to be seen whether Parkinson can welcome the right personnel to get the job done on the pitch for the Welsh side on the up.
