Mark Wood has been ruled out of England’s tour to India after the discovery that he bowled at the tail end of the English domestic season with a broken ankle. It all means that Wood faces a third ankle operation within a year and, however optimistic the prognosis, it is bound to cast doubts on the resilience of England’s fastest bowler and invite concerns about his career both at county and England level.Wood had already been ruled out of the one-day and Test series in Bangladesh and his hopes of recovering in time for the India tour were banished when it was discovered that he fractured a bone in his left ankle when bowling in a Specsavers County Championship match against Surrey in September. With Durham under threat of relegation, he chose to ignore warning signs that something was wrong and battled on gamely. Durham stayed up, but it all came to naught when the ECB relegated them anyway after reluctantly intervening to prevent their bankruptcy.England’s national physiotherapy lead Ben Langley put an optimistic slant on Wood’s recovery, taking comfort from the fact that the injury is different to the one that required two earlier operations.”Woody showed his commitment to Durham with the way he bowled 35 overs in that Surrey game, and we know now that he also showed a hell of a lot of courage and resilience,” Langley said.”His foot and ankle swelled up hugely during the game, which was obviously worrying, and then we were perplexed when nothing significant showed up on the first scan.”It was only when we got him in for a second scan that we discovered he’d been playing on despite having fractured a bone.”So it’s a different injury to what he’s had the previous surgery for, and there’s no reason to think that when he’s had this bone fragment removed, he won’t be able to get back to bowling as well he has for Durham, England Lions and England in the second half of the 2016 summer.”Wood has been awarded a central Test contract by England for 2016-17 – without such an award it would have been questionable about whether Durham could have afforded his salary so soon after requiring a financial bailout from the ECB – but his ability to fulfil a full international summer remains unproven. He made a blistering comeback in the second half of the summer, delivering some of the most potent fast-bowling spells of the season as he helped Durham’s to the final of the NatWest T20 Blast and also featured in England’s 4-1 victory over Pakistan in their one-day international series. He bowled more than 200 overs in all competitions, purportedly without ill effects, but when he pulled out of the Bangladesh tour the problems became evident. Concerns can only have deepened with the latest news.

Everton Heading For Disaster With £8.6m Premier League Flop

Everton will be on the lookout for a prolific goalscorer after another Premier League relegation scrap this season and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source on a potential transfer target.

What's the latest on Everton's interest in Wout Weghorst?

According to Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Everton are one of the clubs interested in signing Wout Weghorst this summer.

Romano revealed an insight into Weghorst's future in a video on his YouTube channel:

"Manchester United have no intention to proceed in negotiations to keep the player for next season,"

"There are already some clubs including Everton, including some Spanish clubs, including German clubs so clubs are informed on the situation so lets see if Burnley will decide to keep the player."

"The price from what I understand will be about €10m (£8.6m) but there are no concrete talks for Manchester United to keep the player."

Would Weghorst be a good signing for Everton?

There is no doubt that Everton desperately need attacking reinforcements after a troubling campaign that left the Toffees teetering on the edge of relegation from the Premier League down to the final minutes of the season.

It will be important for Sean Dyche to identify attacking players who can offer some consistency in front of goal following the departures of Richarlison and Anthony Gordon, as Neal Maupay and mainstay Dominic Calvert-Lewin have failed to offer the goal contributions needed to comfortably compete – scoring just three goals between them in 2022/23.

Turning to Weghorst as the solution, however, does not appear to be a wise move, as over 17 Premier League appearances this season, the 30-year-old forward – dubbed "dreadful" by Piers Morgan – didn't score a single goal and registered only one assist during his time at Old Trafford.

wout-weghorst-man-united-everton-premier-league-transfers

In fact, Weghorst averaged just 0.3 shots on target per game during his league outings since joining the Manchester giants in January, which is worse than Maupay (0.6), Calvert-Lewin (0.6) and McNeil (0.4), further demonstrating that it would be a frankly foolish move.

Although the 6 foot 6 colossus did net nine goals and register four assists in just 18 appearances in the first half of the campaign while on loan at Besiktas, performing well for the Istanbul outfit is not always a good gauge of a striker's talents, as the Toffees found outfit with Cenk Tosun.

The latter man notably made the move to Goodison from the Super Lig side on a £27m deal back in January 2018, although the German-born marksman went on to score just 11 goals in 61 games over four years.

While the 32-year-old – who returned to his former club on an initial loan deal in 2021 – has been prolific at Besiktas with 85 goals in 180 games, managing to repeat those feats in England is a different kettle of fish, as Weghorst also found out this season.

As such – as proved the case with Tosun – it would be an absolute howler for Dyche to sign Weghorst this summer, as it could potentially lead Everton into much bigger trouble next season.

Rodgers Must Ditch Celtic’s "Weak" £4.6k-p/w Dud

With it now seemingly a matter of when and not if Brendan Rodgers will be named as the successor to Ange Postecoglou at Celtic, attention can begin to turn to just how the returning boss will alter the current Hoops squad this summer.

The ex-Leicester City boss – who had been out of work since being sacked by the Foxes back in April – will likely be hoping to keep hold of the Old Firm outfit's key men ahead of mounting another domestic and European charge next summer, with midfield maestro Reo Hatate, in particular, having been mooted for a reunion with Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur.

As well as attempting to persuade the likes of Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi – who has been linked with a move to Spurs – to stay in Glasgow, the Northern Irishman may also have a plan to ditch those who he deems surplus to requirements among the first-team ranks, with Stephen Welsh perhaps among those who could well face the axe.

A recent report from Football Insider claimed that the Scottish champions are open to offers for the 23-year-old this summer, with the former Scotland youth international seemingly also keen to secure increased game time elsewhere.

While the young centre-back may be hoping that his standing could be improved with Rodgers in the dugout instead of Postecoglou, the one-time Liverpool boss could pull off the first blinder of his second spell in charge by showing the 6 foot 3 dud the door.

Will Stephen Welsh leave Celtic this summer?

It is seemingly not the first time that Welsh has been linked with a move away from Celtic Park in recent times, with reports back in January 2022 revealing that the club had rejected a loan approach from Serie A side Udinese, while Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse also made an enquiry last summer.

That was followed by further speculation heading into the winter window that the Coatbridge-born brute could be on his way, albeit with Postecoglou and co ultimately opting against sanctioning an exit following the abrupt end of Moritz Jenz' loan spell.

Celtic's Stephen Welsh

The latter man's exit did not aid Welsh's bid for increased game time, however, as he ultimately ended last season with just four Premiership appearances to his name – all of which came prior to the World Cup break.

The £4.6k-per-week asset notably underwhelmed when he was handed an opportunity to impress, however, having been branded "weak" by pundit Michael Stewart following the shock 2-0 defeat away to St Mirren back in September, while journalist Josh Bunting suggested that both Welsh and Jenz were "all over the place" on the day after getting "bullied" by the likes of Curtis Main and Jonah Ayunga.

That lack of physicality has been a theme of the criticism that has fallen the Scotsman's way of late, with pundit Frank McAvennie also stating that the academy graduate needs a loan move to "toughen him up", while also labelling him as someone who "ball watches".

With Rodgers set to inherit a squad that includes the likes of Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers and January arrival Yuki Kobayashi – all of whom have been above Welsh in the pecking order of late – the 50-year-old can then make the decision to send the one-time Greenock Morton loanee packing, either on a temporary basis or permanently.

What can Bavuma do in 0.264 seconds?

What can you do in 0.264 seconds? Type one word? Shrug your shoulders? Blink? If you’re Temba Bavuma you can react to a push from David Warner’s bat and pull off a piece of fielding that could be match-defining.Bavuma was at point when Warner nudged Kagiso Rabada to point off the back foot and set off for a single, off the second ball of the 13th over. The previous ball, Warner had survived a chance when he edged to third slip but the ball flew over Dean Elgar.Bavuma was in motion as the ball was hit, swooped in and turned his body to the right, to cut down the angle. In one motion, he released the ball while still airborne, as his cap and sunglasses slipped off. His aim was perfect and he found the base of middle stump.Warner’s initial reaction was that he had beaten the throw but replays showed the opposite. He was a fraction away from the crease and was run-out for 35 to give South Africa their first breakthrough. On the last ball of the over, they got a second wicket when Shaun Marsh poked at a good-length delivery that held its line and gifted Faf du Plessis a stomach-high catch at second slip. Australia were 48 without loss at the start of that Rabada over and 2 for 52 at the end of it. All Dale Steyn’s talk about cutting off the head of the snake seemed to be playing out.Was Temba Bavuma’s effort among the best you have seen to effect a run-out? Morkel and Kuhn give Titans winning start

A strong all-round performance from Titans’ captain Albie Morkel ensured the defending champions got their campaign off to a winning start. Morkel shared in the highest partnership of the innings – 74 runs – with top-scorer Heino Kuhn for the fourth wicket, and then derailed Lions’ chase of 195 with 3 for 12.After being sent in, Titans slumped to 16 for 2 within three overs. Kuhn and Qaasim Adams put on 48 before Kuhn and Morkel launched a mid-innings assault. Kuhn’s fifty came off 34 balls and he stayed unbeaten on 83 off 52 balls, including four fours and four sixes. Allrounder Willem Mulder took the most punishment – his four overs went for 56. South Africa finisher Farhaan Behardien did the same job for his franchise and blasted 37 not out off 17 balls to take the Titans close to 200.In reply, Lions lost regular wickets and collapsed to 94 for 7. Morkel, Lungi Ngidi and Malusi Siboto combined well and carved their way through the Lions line-up. Opener Rassie van der Dussen counterattacked with 51 off 28 balls and was only supported by No. 9 Hardus Viljoen. The latter’s 41 off 26 balls was the only other score over 11 in the Lions’ innings as they failed to keep pace.

Man Utd: Romano Issues Big Mason Mount Transfer Update

Manchester United are confident that they can agree personal terms with Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount as Erik Ten Hag endeavours to bring the England international to Old Trafford.

What's the latest transfer news involving Mason Mount?

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have rejected an offer of £40 million from Manchester United for Mount as a gap in valuation still continues to linger between the two clubs.

The report states that Manchester United know the limit of what they would be willing to pay internally; however, they are also prepared to abandon negotiations if they are quoted a price above their valuation of the £80k-a-week ace.

As per The Evening Standard, the Red Devils are set to return with an improved offer for Mount at some point, though Chelsea are holding out for a fee in the region of £70 million.

Due to his contract expiring in 2024, Chelsea would be willing to let Mount go to avoid losing him on a free transfer following months of deadlock in negotiations over fresh terms between player and club.

talkSPORT claimed earlier this month that Mount had agreed personal terms with Manchester United; nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the proposed move will be affected by a difference of opinion in value between the two clubs.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Romano has detailed that Mount is very keen to move to Manchester United this summer.

Romano said: "Man United want the player. Man United are convinced that the agreement with the player is something that'll be easy to reach because Mount wants this Manchester United move, so it's on the clubs now."

Will Manchester United be able to land Mason Mount?

Chelsea seem pretty insistent on recouping a significant fee for their academy product. However, they will also be aware of the reticence prospective suitors may have with regard to bidding over the odds for a player like Mount that only has one year left on his deal.

In 2022/23, Mount made 35 appearances for the Blues across all competitions, registering three goals and six assists, as per Transfermarkt.

mason-mount-chelsea-premier-league-man-united-transfers

As per The Athletic, Liverpool did hold an interest in trying to sign Mount this summer earlier this year, though his excessive price tag put them off and they will now instead focus on alternative targets.

The Sun claim that Leicester City star James Maddison has been earmarked as a 'second option' if Mount proves to be unattainable this off-season, making it anyone's guess as to whether Manchester United will be able to land Mount this summer.

Arsenal Eye "Brilliant" 24 y/o In Surprise Transfer

Arsenal links to “versatile” and “adaptable” fullback Timothy Castagne don’t “surprise” transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Leicester City defender has recently been linked to the North London club following the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League.

Arsenal Transfer News – Timothy Castagne

The Mirror first reported the transfer links between Arsenal and Castagne on May 10th of this year.

According to the publication, the club’s scouts had made ‘checks’ on the player as he was a ‘potential option’ at the time.

However, the rumours intensified on Sunday afternoon after Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported that the club is “now going for Timothy Castagne”.

According to Tavolieri, the deal could “develop quickly” despite the Belgian being a backup option to the Gunners’ primary target Ivan Fresneda.

With Arsenal’s injury problems in the fullback areas, a move to secure the former Atalanta man could prove astute.

The 6 foot 1 defender moved to the King Power stadium in the summer of 2020 for £22m, and Transfermarkt currently values the player at €28m (£24m).

However, Arsenal might be able to strike a deal following the Foxes’ relegation.

Additionally, the player’s relatively modest wages of £65,000-a-week would be unlikely to have a huge impact on the club’s finances.

Leicester's Timothy Castagne

What has transfer insider Dean Jones said about Timothy Castagne to Arsenal?

Jones explained that the versatility and “pedigree” of the Belgian made the links to Arsenal unsurprising.

Speaking to Football FanCast, the transfer insider said: “He is versatile, and he’s quite adaptable. I’m not sure he totally fills the role of an inverted fullback that Arsenal might look for at times, but Castagne’s got good pedigree in this league.

He also explained that the situation at the Midlands club makes the idea of a move all the more plausible, adding: “He is obviously going to have to seek a move this transfer window because of his situation at Leicester and there are definitely worse options out there, so the link doesn’t totally surprise me.”

Would Timothy Castagne be a good signing for Arsenal?

Described as “Brilliant” by journalist Ryan Hubbard, if Edu Gasper can get the deal done at a reasonable price, it seems like a no-brainer.

According to WhoScored, the Arlon-born fullback has averaged a respectable rating of 6.71 across his 36 Premier League games this year.

His underlying stats, whilst not massively impressive, paint a picture of a reliable and solid defender.

According to FBref, compared to players in his position across Europe’s top five leagues, Castagne sits in the top 9% for clearances, the top 17% for aerial duals won, the top 25% for tackles and the top 27% for blocks, all per 90.

However, the biggest asset he could bring to Arsenal is his positional versatility.

According to Football Critic, the dynamic defender has played in both fullback positions and further up the pitch at points in his Leicester career.

With the North London club’s injury problems in the fullback areas, this deal could prove hugely beneficial in any future title charge.

Bowlers lead Haryana's fightback on 14-wicket day

A round-up of the opening day of Group C matches in the final round of the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Dec-2016

File photo – Harshal Patel took two early wickets to set the tone for Haryana’s fightback

Fourteen wickets fell at the Eden Gardens where Haryana reduced Tripura to 70 for 4 after getting bowled out for 231. After Tripura elected to field, their pace trio of Manisankar Murasingh (3 for 53), Sanjay Majumder (3 for 53) and Bunti Roy (2 for 44) shared eight wickets, while left-arm spinner Gurinder Singh took one. Haryana could have been sent packing for a much lower score had it not been for their lower order. Chaitanya Bishnoi, the No. 4, fell to Roy to leave Haryana 103 for 6, having made 52 of those runs himself. The recovery began with Rahul Tewatia’s 35 at No. 7. Joginder Sharma made 21 at No. 8, while Haryana’s last two, Harshal Patel and captain Mohit Sharma, chipped in with 26 and 39 not out respectively.Harshal took out Udiyan Bose and Samrat Singha in a new-ball burst to leave Tripura on 22 for 2. Bishal Ghosh was caught behind off Joginder for 36 before Tewatia removed Majumder for a duck on what turned out to be the last ball of the day. Wicketkeeper-batsman Smit Patel was not out on 26.Goa captain Sagun Kamat scored his third score in excess of hundred this season to take his team to 260 for 6 against Himachal Pradesh in Mumbai. Kamat dominated an opening stand of 47 with Sumiran Amonkar (18) before Snehal Kauthankar (43) joined him for a 70-run stand. It took a run-out to end Kamat’s resistance, but not before he had put on a further 95 for the third wicket with Darshan Misal. Kamat’s 104 off 170 balls was studded with 11 fours and two sixes. Goa squandered their strong position after Kamat’s dismissal, as they lost three more wickets for 31 runs. Misal was unbeaten on 68 at stumps.Hyderabad’s new-ball duo of Ravi Kiran and Chama Milind took nine wickets between them to dismiss Andhra for 190 in Lucknow. In reply, Tanmay Agarwal and Akshath Reddy saw off seven overs as Hyderabad ended the day on 10 for no loss.Kiran took 4 for 33, while Milind took his maiden first-class five-wicket haul to finish with 5 for 28. The duo’s efforts meant Andhra lasted just 59 overs after they were asked to bat. That Andhra got close to 200 was down to half-centuries from Manyala Pranith (63) and Ashwin Hebbar (52), as their 91-run sixth-wicket partnership rescued the team from 80 for 5.Amandeep Khare struck his second first-class century, but Samiullah Beigh’s four-for reduced Chhattisgarh to 217 for 6 against Jammu & Kashmir in Gwalior. J&K elected to field and could only get 60 overs in as the entire first session was ruled out. Once play began, Beigh sent Chhattisgarh’s openers back for ducks in the first five overs. Khare then led the repair job, stitching together 84 for the third wicket with Anupam Toppo (40) and 120 for the fourth with Ashutosh Singh. Beigh troubled Chhattisgarh again by taking out Khare for 106, before sending back a third batsman – Avnish Dhaliwal – for a duck. Manoj Singh, the wicketkeeper, fell off the last ball of the penultimate over, but Ashutosh stayed unbeaten on 41, along with Ajay Mandal.Kerala pacer Athif Bin Ashraf took three early wickets on first-class debut to leave Services 103 for 4 on a 42-over day at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. Ashraf sent back Nakul Verma, Ravi Chauhan and Amit Pachhara for single digits to leave Services 22 for 3. That became 43 for 4 when Basil Thampi bowled Irfan Khan for 15. Anshul Gupta, the Services captain and opener, stayed not out on 52 and had Shamsher Yadav on 23 for company.
