'Yasir struggled with expectation' – Mushtaq

Mushtaq Ahmed, Pakistan’s bowling coach, believes that Yasir Shah struggled with the expectation of backing up his matchwinning display at Lord’s

Andrew McGlashan at Old Trafford 22-Jul-2016Mushtaq Ahmed, Pakistan’s bowling coach, believes that Yasir Shah struggled with the expectation of backing up his matchwinning display at Lord’s on the opening day of the second Test.Yasir’s ten-wicket match haul was key to Pakistan securing their 75-run victory in the opening Test and propelled him to No. 1 in the world, but he finished the first day at Old Trafford with 0 for 111 from 31 overs as centuries from Alastair Cook and Joe Root led England to a commanding 314 for 4.Although he made a couple of deliveries grip on the Old Trafford surface – two, in particular, spun and bounced appreciably at Root and Cook – England were able to milk him far more comfortably than they had done last week. With only four frontline bowlers, Misbah-ul-Haq did not have many places to turn to for the lengthy spells required to allow him to rotate his three quicks. Yasir bowled 18 overs unchanged – split by the lunch interval – and by the time he was given a break, England had taken him for 69 runs and gone some way towards ensuring no immediate hangover from their poor display against at Lord’s.”Sometimes the expectation does put you under pressure and you are trying to deliver the same performance,” Mushtaq said. “You start losing your basics, discipline and what he did in the last Test match. He got 10 wickets last time and maybe that momentum carried on and he forgot the basics.””I think the ball wasn’t coming nicely from his hand,” he added. “We did discuss it, but during a game it’s very hard for a coach to tell a player what to do. But we have good communication so I sent a couple of messages because the ball was coming out flatter with less spin. On a first-day pitch, the margin of error for a legspinner against good players like Root and Cook is very small.”Root and Cook both used the word ‘tempo’ when pinpointing a key difference to their approach than at Lord’s, finding the right balance between not allowing Yasir to settle but avoiding anything as reckless as Root’s top-edged slog-sweep or Moeen Ali’s wild second-innings hack.”It was just nice to see an improvement on the way we played him in the first game,” Root said. “Playing him with a straight bat, not going across the ball as much, on a day-one wicket it definitely made it a lot easier for us to take the risk out of it but still rotate the strike and score at a decent rate. We batted at a far better tempo than at Lord’s.”Root, though, did admit a degree of nervousness when he brought out a strong slog-sweep against Yasir in the 51st over, with the captain at the other end, but this time it skimmed to the boundary rather than into the hands of a catcher. Such are the fine margins for batsmen. However, Mushtaq backed Yasir to respond positively from his tough day and play a role on a surface that Cook expects to break up later on. A worthy example to draw on, although not an occasion anyone associated with England cares to remember, is the Adelaide Test in 2006-07. Over the first two days of that match, England racked up 551 for 6 and Shane Warne took 1 for 167 before producing of his greatest displays on the final day to conjure a famous victory.”I always believe as a good bowler you have to bowl good overs against good players to get them out. He didn’t do that today but he will come out tomorrow, he’s a strong guy, he wasn’t hiding and that’s a positive thing,” Mushtaq said.

Liverpool Suffer Blow Over "Towering" Free Agent Target

Liverpool have been dealt a blow after learning that Eintracht Frankfurt defender and Reds target Evan Ndicka is closing in on a move to AS Roma, according to reports.

Who is Evan Ndicka?

Ndicka currently plays his football at the Deutsche Bank Park having moved there back in July 2018, and he's since clocked up a total of 180 appearances, but with his contract set to expire at the end of the season and the fact that he's rejected several new offers to extend his stay with Oliver Glasner's side, is expected to become a free agent in the upcoming window.

In the Premier League, the Daily Mirror previously reported that the Reds, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were all firmly in the race to sign the 23-year-old, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey further revealing that FSG and Jurgen Klopp had contacted his representatives to ask for updates on his situation, but they have since suffered a massive transfer setback.

Who is signing Ndicka?

According to 90min, AS Roma are now "confident" of completing the free signing of Ndicka, despite interest from Liverpool, Spurs and even Manchester City. Barcelona also "showed a willingness" earlier in the year, but they have since "backed away" from a move. The 6 foot 2 colossus is likely "on his way" to Italy to link up with Jose Mourinho's outfit, who are optimistic that they can reach an agreement in the "near future".

Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka.

Liverpool missing out on sealing a free transfer, especially for a centre-back like Ndicka who has been dubbed a “towering” titan by journalist Jacque Talbot, will be a major blow for Klopp, who will know how much of a rock his target can be at the heart of a backline.

The 2021/22 Europa League champion is currently averaging 4.8 clearances and 2.6 aerial wins per league game, via WhoScored, not to mention that he’s won 17 tackles from 24 players challenged since the start of the term, so he would have slotted perfectly into the defence alongside the likes of Virgil Van Dijk with his calm but physical presence.

Whilst the Paris native is strong in the natural aspect of a defender's game, he also likes to get involved at the attacking end of the spectrum having posted 22 goal contributions (12 goals and ten assists) in 180 Frankfurt outings, making him a real threat at both ends of the pitch.

Finally, Ndicka also has the versatility to operate at left-back alongside his usual central role which would have been a great quality for the boss to have at his disposal given his track record with defensive injuries, but he will now have to turn his attention elsewhere over the summer.

"Extraordinary" Star Could Replace £60m Chelsea Flop

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae this summer – and the South Korean could replace £60m flop Marc Cucurella at Stamford Bridge.

Would Kim Min-Jae be a good signing for Chelsea?

According to 90min, Napoli could be forced to sell the powerful centre-back this summer, with Chelsea among those interested in bringing him to the Premier League.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are all also thought to be in the running, while Chelsea are said to have sent scouts to watch the 26-year-old play this month – and could bring him to Stamford Bridge for as little as €45m (£39m) due to a release clause in his contract, which is only eligible in the first two weeks of the upcoming transfer window.

Since joining from Fenerbahce last summer, the six foot three defender has gone on to make 34 appearances in Serie A for Luciano Spalletti's side, contributing two goals and two assists with a superb 7.10 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Reece James is currently ranked as the top performer at Stamford Bridge with a 7.07 average rating, which emphasises just how impressive Kim has been in his first season in Italy.

He also averaged a 7.20 rating in the Champions League as Napoli reached the quarter-finals, so clearly has what it takes to play at the very top level.

Former Manchester United man Park Ji-sung was full of praise for his compatriot earlier in the campaign, saying:

"Extraordinary, what a talent. He took the right step by going to play in Turkey and showed himself ready to take a step forward. He didn't come directly to Italy but step by step, so he grew up and there is no doubt that he is doing extraordinary things, as a technical leader and personality in Naples".

Teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also dubbed him as an "iron barrel" and described him as one of the best in the world, so he could certainly be a quality addition to Chelsea's squad this summer if he can live up to that praise.

Could Kim Min-Jae replace Cucurella at Chelsea?

One concern for Todd Boehly is the number of defensive options already at Stamford Bridge but if he were able to complete a deal for the former Beijing Guoan star, perhaps it could see Cucurella moved on.

The Spanish defender joined from Brighton last summer but has endured a difficult first season in west London, with WhoScored ranking him as the 15th-best performer in Chelsea's squad.

Often utilised as a left-sided centre-back, Cucurella hasn't looked comfortable at all in recent months and his lack of defensive awareness was cruelly exposed in the Champions League defeat against Real Madrid.

Given the competition for places at Chelsea and Boehly's demands for a better 2023/24 season, the 24-year-old is surely a prime candidate to be moved on this summer, especially if it can fund a move for Kim.

The South Korean has averaged far more interceptions, clearances and blocks per game than Cucurella so far this term, so would be a far more natural centre-back for Mauricio Pochettino to have at Stamford Bridge, making him a fine target Boehly should definitely try to sign.

India A go on top with two points from washout

Rain caused the abandonment of the second match at Harrup Park in Mackay, between South Africa A and India A, giving the teams two points each

‘We’re at the peak of our game’ – Kedar Jadhav

Rain caused the abandonment of the second match at Harrup Park in Mackay, after South Africa A bowled 35.2 overs against India A. The first match there, between Australia A and National Performance Squad, had been abandoned without a ball bowled on Wednesday, due to a wet and unsafe outfield.South Africa opted to bowl on Thursday and had the India batsmen on a leash for the most part. Openers Mandeep Singh and Karun Nair put on 31 in eight overs before Nair was dismissed by Dwaine Pretorius for 15. Thereafter, No. 3 Shreyas Iyer handed a thick edge to first slip off Andile Phehlukwayo for 4, and Mandeep was bowled for 29 off 51 by medium-pacer Malusi Siboto. India were in trouble at 69 for 3 in the 20th over. They were rescued by a partnership of 70 between captain Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav. They batted together for 15.1 overs as Pandey scored 47 off 73 to continue his good form. The stand was broken when Pandey was bowled by Phehlukwayo in the 35th over. Jadhav was unbeaten on 41 off 53 and Sanju Samson on 0 off 4 when rain interrupted in the next over to put a premature end to proceedings, giving the teams two points each. Pretorius had bowled his 10 overs by then for 1 for 25 with two maidens.India A went on top of the points table with a total of 11 points from four matches, followed by NPS with 10, and South Africa A and Australia A with seven points each.

Burnley Plot Talks To Sign 21 Y/o "Duracell Bunny"

An update has emerged on Burnley and their plans to bolster their defensive options ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Cody Drameh to Burnley?

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Clarets are in the race to land Leeds United full-back Cody Drameh and are plotting talks with the Yorkshire-based team over a deal for the ace.

Luton Town, who have also been promoted to the Premier League ahead of next season, are set to compete for the right-back's signature after he spent the second half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Kenilworth Road.

"Burnley and Luton are prepared to open talks over the permanent transfer of Cody Drameh in the coming days," he tweeted.

However, the reporter has added that the Whites are hoping to convince the starlet to remain at Elland Road next term after they appoint their new head coach.

How did Cody Drameh perform this season?

The 21-year-old dynamo enjoyed a terrific campaign with the Hatters in the Championship and his performances for Rob Edwards suggest that he would be a dream heir to the departing Matthew Lowton.

It has already been confirmed that the veteran defender is leaving Turf Moor on a free transfer this summer after eight years at the club and Drameh could come in as an ideal replacement.

Burnley defender Matthew Lowton.

Lowton made eight appearances in the second tier during the 2022/23 season and averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.72.

The 33-year-old offered little in the way of creativity as he made 0.5 key passes per game and, therefore, could have been a liability to the side from an attacking perspective in the top-flight due to his lack of quality in possession.

Whereas, Drameh, who averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.09 across 16 outings in the division, created 1.6 chances per match for Luton and showcased his ability to burst forward from right-back to open up the opposition and provide his teammates with opportunities to score in the final third.

The young full-back, who was once hailed as a "Duracell bunny" by former Cardiff City boss Steve Morison, also displayed his defensive quality as he made 4.2 tackles and interceptions per game and won 55% of his duels in the Championship.

Lowton, meanwhile, did not offer as much protection to his team at the back.

The Englishman made 2.5 tackles and interceptions per match and won 54% of his battles, which shows that he did not make as many interventions for his team as Drameh did for his and, therefore, did not stop as many opposition attacks from leading to chances.

These statistics suggest that the £4.4k-per-week talent could come in as a dream heir to the departing Burnley veteran as the 21-year-old is 12 years younger and his form in 22/23 indicates that the ace would offer more quality at both ends of the pitch.

CSA loses domestic T20 sponsorship

South Africa’s domestic T20 tournament has lost its sponsor after courier company RAM chose not to renew its sponsorship after four seasons

Firdose Moonda02-Sep-2016

South Africa’s domestic T20 competition will no longer be called the Ram Slam Trophy•Gallo Images

South Africa’s domestic T20 tournament has lost its sponsor after courier company RAM chose not to renew its sponsorship deal after four seasons. Neither Cricket South Africa nor RAM provided details for the split, although a CSA press release quoted CEO Haroon Lorgat saying the parties were “not able to agree on the option to extend”. The news was made public after 4.30pm on Friday, and ESPNcricinfo’s attempts to contact RAM at the time were unsuccessful.RAM took over the domestic T20 tournament sponsorship in the 2012-13 season with a three-year deal. Last year, the company extended it for an additional summer. In that time, several innovations were brought into the tournament, including offering prize money for crowd catches, international signings and broadcasting matches to foreign markets. However, the tournament was embroiled in a match-fixing scandal last summer. News of possible irregularities first broke in November when CSA said it had learned of an international syndicate trying to corrupt domestic cricket and warned players of vigilance. In December, the South African board confirmed it had charged an intermediary for “contriving to fix, or otherwise improperly influence aspects” of the Ram Slam T20 competition.By the end of 2015, CSA charged Gulam Bodi with several counts of breaching the anti-corruption code. On January 25, he received a 20-year ban.At the time, RAM’s executive director Alan da Costa confirmed to that the company was reconsidering its association with the tournament. “No one ever wants their brand associated with any dishonest activities and we are seriously considering the outcome of the matter before renewing our sponsorship,” da Costa said.In August 2016, four other players – Thami Tsolekile, Ethy Mbhalati, Jean Symes and Pumelela Matshikwe – received bans of between seven and 12 years for their involvement in the scandal. CSA said it had no evidence to suggest a fix was carried out but that “material discussions about match-fixing” took place. The investigation is still underway. In the meantime, CSA has also held a review of its domestic competitions and is pondering a proposal to launch a global T20 tournament, similar to leagues around the world. If approved, an eight-team competition could take place from the 2017-18 season, which would leave the domestic T20 tournament struggling to keep pace with its international counterparts next summer. For the 2016-17 season, the T20 tournament is set to take place as it always has but the competition faces challenges with a declining Rand and a clash with international fixtures. Even though CSA moved a Test against Sri Lanka to ensure international players would be available for the T20 tournament, the first half will coincide with South Africa’s Test tour to Australia. The T20 tournament is scheduled to begin on November 12 and run until December 17.
