Arsenal: £58k-p/w Talent Could Have Stopped Title Collapse

Arsenal cruised to victory last night, bouncing back from their string of poor results to claim their first Premier League win since early April. Conversely, it marked yet another loss for Frank Lampard's Chelsea team, who have now managed to taste defeat across all of his six games in charge.

It was a game the hosts were expected to win, and thus Mikel Arteta saw fit to slightly rotate his outfit in key areas. Whilst picking his moment carefully, it also showcased the highest level of disrespect, to decide that this home derby against a London rival was an easy enough fixture to do so.

Therefore, the likes of Leandro Trossard, Jorginho and Jakub Kiwior all came into the side, having previously seen their play time limited.

However, it was the latter in particular who showcased his class in front of a packed-out Emirates crowd.

Fresh from their disappointing loss to Manchester City, it might have seemed like the title was slipping away from them. Despite this, the professionalism shown to continue pressing onwards suggests that the fight is not yet done, despite things looking bleak.

What those aforementioned changes did prove was that for all his success this campaign, Arteta's decision to persist with Rob Holding instead of his Polish centre-back could have been the main factor in costing them silverware.

How did Jakub Kiwior play vs Chelsea?

When asked why the £58k-per-week talent was started last night, the Spaniard claimed: "He looked ready, he looked fresh. Better and better every day. He’s got the potential to be great."

That freshness could have been imperative in making up for the key absence William Saliba had been, yet instead the 27-year-old continued to start.

With a 6.5 rating or lower in each of his last five appearances, and the sole 7.0 rating buoyed by a consolation strike, it is clear to see where the Gunners' main problems lie, via Sofascore.

Meanwhile, against the Blues, Kiwior recorded a 7.0 rating in which he showed defensive efficiency combined with comfort on the ball that would have been key in upholding their system.

arsenal-chelsea-jakub-kiwior

He would record four clearances, three interceptions, one tackle and one block, yet married this with a 93% pass accuracy too, as per Sofascore.

Had they enjoyed this kind of classy presence at the back in the games with Southampton, West Ham United and maybe even Liverpool, Arsenal would surely have cruised to victory rather than dropped key points.

Whilst the Premier League is likely still out of their reach, Arteta must now see the error of his ways that has cost them dearly.

Kiwior is evidently light years ahead of Holding, and at just 23 years old, is the future of the club. He should have played in his place and perhaps, the Gunners wouldn't have crumbled defensively in the last few weeks.

Praise For £60k-p/w Declan Rice After Fan Interaction

Fans online have been left singing the praises of West Ham United captain Declan Rice after he showed his class when interacting with a young fan.

Why is Declan Rice getting plaudits?

It was a great outing for the England international on Sunday evening as he led his team to a Premier League win over rivals Manchester United.

In the end, it was a howler from goalkeeper David De Gea that allowed Said Benrahma to score the only goal of the game as the Hammers picked up a 1-0 victory.

The three points mean that West Ham are almost certainly set to avoid relegation at the end of the season and Rice played his part in the victory.

He was named the “star man” by Jonty Coleman in his football.london player ratings for his 8/10 display. The journalist wrote: “For however much West Ham get for Rice when he eventually leaves, he will be worth every penny, and probably many, many more.

“Showed he was the Premier League’s highest interception winner by winning several against a Man United side chasing Champions League football.

“Created chances with his quick feet and clever running and mopped up all sorts in the middle of the pitch. Probably deserved an assist for his second-half crosses, an outstanding display.”

What’s more, as per Squawka, Rice is the only player in Europe’s top five leagues with 30+ interceptions, 51 clearances, take-ons completed, aerial duels won, chances created, and shots this season while he’s also won possession more times than any other player (322).

With that in mind, it’s little wonder clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Liverpool are all monitoring the £60k-per-week midfielder.

But after footage emerged with the 24-year-old speaking to one starstruck fan at the London Stadium, love for the player seems to have gone up even higher.

As the video shows, Rice can be seen comforting the young supporter who seems a little overwhelmed after meeting one of his heroes. The Englishman then calms the child and gives him his shirt.

It’s a very wholesome exchange and people online really appreciated the kindness. Here are some of the best Twitter reactions…

And the praise kept coming…

'Shelve the egos for the good of West Indies' – Sammy

Darren Sammy has called for West Indies’ players and administrators to put their “egos” to one side and work for the betterment of the game in the region

Andrew Miller26-May-2016Darren Sammy has called for West Indies’ players and administrators to put their “egos” to one side and work for the betterment of the game in the region, as he prepares to return to competitive action for the first time since leading his side to victory in the World T20 at Eden Gardens last month.Sammy, who has arrived at Hampshire for this season’s NatWest T20 Blast, will sit out tomorrow’s clash with Middlesex at Uxbridge due to registration issues, and instead make his first outing of the campaign in next Thursday’s home match against Kent.Either way, he will not be making a triumphant homecoming for West Indies during their Tri-Nations Series against South Africa and Australia, which gets underway in Providence on June 3, having been cut from the WICB’s list of contracted players back in January.Sammy defends team-mate Gayle

Darren Sammy has defended Chris Gayle as an “entertainer” and says his outspoken nature makes him an easy target in the media.
Last week, Gayle revived accusations of sexism with some lewd comments in an interview with The Times. However, Sammy played down the latest row.
“Chris Gayle is the universe boss, a team mate of mine who I admire and respect. I just think people target Chris for no reason.
“To me, Chris is one of our cricketing heroes. He’s an entertainer, first, but a lot of people have jumped on his back.
“I always support Chris because of what he does on a cricket field. Yes, we have a responsibility to ourselves, and the people who watch us, but sometimes I feel Chris is a target for newspaper headlines.”

Instead, Sammy has spent much of the past month on a champions’ tour of his home island of St Lucia. With his team-mate and fellow St Lucian, Johnson Charles, alongside him, he has been parading the World T20 trophy around his country’s schools, honouring the pledge he made during his emotional speech on the podium in Kolkata, when he dedicated the victory to “all our fans in the Caribbean”.However, he is itching to return to the cricket field after a month spent basking in the afterglow of a remarkable triumph, in which he emulated the achievement of the great Clive Lloyd in leading West Indies to a second global title, following their previous victory in the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka.”I wouldn’t say up there with Lloyd because what he did with his team was historical,” Sammy told ESPNcricinfo during a Kwik Cricket Festival in Hampshire. “But I can’t stand next to you and say I have not enjoyed it. I got a chance to go home with the trophy, and I took the trophy to the people because I said it was for the people. I saw the reaction from the kids – I was once a kid and I knew how much I felt when I saw my heroes.””I belong on the cricket field and I’ve not been on the cricket field since the World T20, so coming here to Hampshire, I can’t wait to get started.”Despite the satisfaction of West Indies’ triumph – across three formats, following the success of both the Women’s World T20 squad in India and the men’s Under-19 squad in Bangladesh – Sammy’s frustration with the WICB was evident once again earlier this week when he and his fellow exiles, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo, exchanged incredulous messages on Twitter with Kieron Pollard, following his unexpected inclusion in the Tri-Series squad.”It’s sad that for so long it’s been a back-and-forth between the board and players,” said Sammy. “But these three wins show we can win cricket at all levels, and if we could work together, that’s all you need. Players and board working together, sharing a common goal, with no egos. It would be better for West Indies cricket but at the moment it’s just not happening.”They always say sports and politics don’t mix, which is true. But at the end you have to give credit to the most important thing, which is the cricket. And who plays the cricket? The cricketers. That is your product. If you plant corn, you have to take care of it, nurture it, fertilize it and then you can reap the rewards, so it is similar to the West Indies cricket team.”There are movements afoot to reinvigorate the administration of West Indies cricket, and Sammy said he had been inspired to witness a speech made by Sir Garfield Sobers back in April, when a panel of West Indies legends gathered in Grenada to call for the dissolution of the board, in line with the CARICOM cricket review panel’s recommendation.”I listened to Sir Garry speak, and it brought tears to my eyes,” said Sammy. “The same thing he went through, playing 50 years ago, it is still happening. To watch a legend that I look up to, speak with such passion and hurt, it’s sad. The people in charge of West Indies cricket have to make it better, swallow their pride and their ego – and some of us players too – and work for the betterment of West Indies cricket. Because that’s who we play for, the fans.”Despite the distractions, Sammy confirmed that the politics had played a massive part in uniting his team throughout their World T20 triumph.”I’m telling you, it was a massive motivation, a massive drive for the guys,” he said. “We made a conscious effort to go out and play and stay focused. As a team it brought us closer together and in the face of adversity we always tend to rise. We fought like cornered tigers, and it was a very memorable experience, seeing guys committed to one cause.”We should use that in all formats we play, whether one-day or Tests, because once we believe and stick together, we can achieve. I am just hoping that, in the coming months, we could have the right people in place to take West Indies cricket forward.”

Chelsea Send Scouts To Watch £93-A-Week Star

Chelsea reportedly sent scouts to watch Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in action over the weekend, according to a fresh update on the Blues' long-standing interest in the Serie A star.

Who is Victor Osimhen?

The Nigerian has been one of the standout attacking players in Europe this season, spearheading Napoli's memorable Serie A title triumph with a string of outstanding performances. The £93,000-a-week star has scored 23 goals in 29 league appearances for the newly-crowned Italian champions, while in the Champions League, he netted five times.

Chelsea have been linked with a summer move for Osimhen, as the Blues look to bring in an elite striker after struggling in that position all season long. Kai Havertz isn't at his best in that role, instead preferring to create deeper, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has had little to no impact at the club, scoring just three goals in 21 appearances.

It looks as though the west Londoners' interest in the 24-year-old continues to be strong, following a new update that has emerged.

Are Chelsea signing Osimhen?

According to Il Mattino, two Chelsea representatives were present for Napoli's 2-0 defeat to Monza on Sunday, in order to watch Osimhen close up. Granted, it proved to be an off day for both the striker and the team as a whole, but it may do little to affect the Blues' interest in him given their league title is already wrapped up.

Manchester United, Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are still thought to be in the conversation, too, in what could be an expensive battle for his signature this summer.

Osimhen should be viewed as Chelsea's No.1 attacking target at the end of the season, with Harry Kane highly unlikely to join the club, given their rivalry with Tottenham. The Napoli ace has been compared to Didier Drogba by Jose Mourinho, such is his dominant style leading the line, while Walter Mazzarri has hailed him as "phenomenal" in the past.

At 24, the 23-cap and 15-goal Nigeria international is younger than Drogba was when he arrived at Stamford Bridge back in 2004 and he could enjoy a similar impact, given his combination of brute strength, clever movement and ruthless finishing.

Whether they are able to entice Osimhen to the club is up for debate, however, with a lack of Champions League football potentially working against them, especially as the likes of United, Newcastle, PSG and Bayern all look likely to promise him that next season.

Janak Gamage quits as Bangladesh Women coach

Bangladesh Women coach Janak Gamage has resigned from his job following an extended period during which, he said, he worked with the team without the BCB extending his contract

Janak Gamage: ‘Other teams practise throughout the year but the Bangladesh team does not get that chance’•ICC

Bangladesh Women coach Janak Gamage has resigned from his job because he found out that the BCB wouldn’t be extending his contract for a third time later this year. His next assignment, he said, will be with Thailand Women.Gamage, a former Sri Lanka fast bowler, was appointed by the BCB in August 2014 on a one-year contract, and he was given a second one-year contract last year after which he took the team to the Women’s World T20 in India earlier this year.”I am leaving Dhaka tomorrow,” Gamage said. “I will work with the Thailand women’s team from now. I did not get any offer for extension from the BCB. There is a tournament coming up in Thailand and they have called me. I have resigned because the BCB has not shown any interest in retaining me.”Despite being a foreign coach, Gamage had the added advantage of knowing the Bangla language; he picked it up having played in the Dhaka leagues in the 1980s. During his stint as coach, however, Gamage’s only success was in the form of a 2-0 series win over Zimbabwe in unofficial T20s in November 2015, after which Bangladesh ensured qualification to World T20 in India by finishing runners-up in the qualifying tournament in Thailand. But, in India, they lost all their group matches.Gamage said that the team has the talent, but it needs to be developed better. “I enjoyed working here,” he said. “Always felt like home.”The team has come a long way and can go further if it can overcome a few things. The other teams practise throughout the year but the Bangladesh team does not get that chance. They need to overcome this issue. I believe this team has a good time ahead.”

Arsenal Could Revive Interest In "Complete" £20m Gem

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be looking at improving his squad ahead of next season as they take to the Champions League for the first time since 2016/17.

The Gunners have recently been linked with Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo according to The Telegraph as Arteta looks to sign another player from the champions following his captures of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus last summer.

However, the report states that if the Portuguese full-back doesn’t join, Arteta could revive their interest in young Spanish defender Ivan Fresneda, who Football Insider claims has been a long-term target of the club and may only cost around £20m this summer. It's even suggested that the Gunners are 'poised to make a bid'.

This could give the manager the licence to ditch Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu during the transfer window, with the £55k-per-week liability playing 31 matches for the club amid a number of injury problems.

His latest injury ruled him out for the rest of the season after picking up the issue in March, and it could be some time before he returns.

The right-back ranked as just the 17th-best player in the squad with a rating of 6.68/10 as per Sofascore, while ranking in seventh for tackles (1.7) and interceptions per match (0.7), suggesting that he hasn't exactly set the Emirates on fire when he took to the field.

Could Arsenal sign Ivan Fresneda this summer?

Arteta failed with a bid to land the defender back in January and could divert his attention back to the youngster ahead of next term.

The 18-year-old ranks in the top 10% for blocks per 90 (1.65) and clearances per 90 (3.3) across Europe’s big five leagues over the previous 365 days, indicating he is already one of the finest players on the continent in regard to these defensive metrics – and there is no doubt he will continue to get better given his age.

Being such a young defender will obviously come with its downsides but this is a player who has already silenced one of the best wingers in the game, with one prominent scout and analyst having suggested that he "pocketed Vini Jr" when Real Valladolid took on Madrid at the end of 2022.

Across 20 La Liga appearances this season, he has an average Sofascore rating of 6.7/10, a solid effort considering his inexperience and playing regularly in the top flight will stand him in good stead for the future.

Fresneda even ranks in the top five of the Real Valladolid squad for accurate passes per game and tackles per game, underlining his importance in the team despite his tender years.

La Liga podcaster Matt Clark described the player as “remarkably complete” while also dubbing him as one of the “revelations of the season”, and for a fee of just £20m, Arteta could turn him into a world-class star and ditch Tomiyasu in the process.

Jamie Overton five-for rips through Hampshire

Jamie Overton turned Hampshire’s day on its head with a devastating five-wicket haul at the Ageas Bowl. Overton ended with season’s-best figures of 5 for 42 as he tore through the Hampshire middle order, after Jimmy Adams’ fifty had given them the perfect start.Somerset continued to strengthen their position by reaching the close 66 for 1 – with Marcus Trescothick and Johann Myburgh sensibly seeing out the day.Hampshire, after winning the toss and batting, got off to a fine start with their highest first-wicket partnership of the season. Captain Will Smith elevated himself to the top of the order and put on 89 with Adams in a chanceless stand. Smith was the only casualty of a positive morning when he edged to second slip for 32.Adams, who had passed fifty in 85-balls brought up with a delicious cut shot, fell for 61 a few overs after lunch but Tom Alsop and Michael Carberry added another 48 runs as danger looked a long way off.But then Jim Allenby sprung into life, having Alsop leg before and then bowling Liam Dawson. Jamie Overton got his first thanks mainly to a good midwicket catch by Chris Rogers, a ball which left Carberry’s bat and never seemed to get more than a few centimetres off the grass.Sean Ervine and Lewis McManus continued the procession – the former edging behind before wicketkeeper McManus had his middle stump pointing towards fine leg. Gareth Berg and Mason Crane did not hang around either as Overton, who is in the England performance squad this summer, completed his first five-for of the season, and second in his career, both wickets lbw.At that stage Hampshire had lost six wickets for 11 runs to dramatically collapse, admittedly with the ball swinging.Tino Best and Ryan McLaren temporarily paused the wicket flow with a 24 run partnership, the first pair to get to grips with the conditions. But that was short lived as Jamie’s brother Craig Overton found Best skying to Rogers at mid-on. The hosts had been bowled out for 219, after collapsed from 166 for 2 soon after lunch.Somerset’s reply started poorly as Rogers tamely edged his first delivery – a ball on his legs – to McManus. Best attempted to bowl at ferocious speed but could not find the wicket he wanted, despite a close leg before shout to Trescothick – soon after he was warned by the umpire for his follow through.Former England international Trescothick reached close on 33 with Myburgh 29, the duo watchfully playing out the day to trail by 153 runs.Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein said: “The wicket looked very dry and I think we got the decision with the toss right and I got my hopes up in the first session. It was probably the best I have seen Jimmy bat for a long while and then another partnership but we keep making fundamental mistakes. We are about 250 short. We are playing weak cricket and giving the same again. Jamie Overton has international ability and can bowl sides out. He took advantage of our mistakes.”Adam Wheater was left out. We want to give Lewis a good run. We have given away 251 bye extras and three points docked for slow over rates and we need more energy, which Lewis can give. Every time Lewis has come into the first team he has given character and energy.”I feel we have given Adam a long run. He is batting well but we have had a conversation with him where I think he should be pushing the top order batters and he doesn’t see himself as a batter. With the gloves he is not what we need right now.”
